All Township Residents:
Approximately
3 miles of County Road (County State Aid Highway) #4 runs through our Town from about Red
Oak Road to the Breezy Point City Limits. The road project will include a
total re-design and rebuild from Lakeshore Drive in Breezy Point to County
Road 18. This
is a State Aid highway and is therefore subject to State standards regarding
it's speed limit, signing and construction.
Recently,
MN-DOT and Crow Wing County announced an effort to gather public opinion
pertaining to the rebuilding of this important road from Co Rd 18 into
the Breezy Point portion of this highway. A "Project Management
Team" has been formed to gather information and opinions relating to the
scope of this project. The PMT was formed to gather and present a
position paper on the wants and needs of the local community to the County
Board and MDOT where all final decisions are to be made on the
project.
The construction timetable
shows a build date of 2010. The Town
of Pelican is interested in knowing what you would like to see done during
this construction project. In the past, we have been the recipient
of many complaints and commentary resulting from events taking place on
this road. Typical comments would address safety issues, speed limits
and road Right-Of-Way issues. Many are concerned with increased speeds
that will likely occur when this project is completed. Others have
voice concern over related safety issues given the logistics of the existing
road. MN-DOT has announced that some land will be acquired to improve
the ROW for this highway and that the present design speed is only about
35 to 40 MPH. This new design speed may be raised coincidentally
with this project. This may mean that the radius of many of the sharper
curves will have to be increased to comply with this higher design speed.
Land adjacent to or near the existing highway
will have to be acquired for the project and some of the existing road
footprint may be relocated to straighten curves or to provide a cushion
of safety for access to the highway.
The Town board intends to vigorously
defend the wishes of it's residents when asked to provide comment on this
proposed project. In order to do that, we need your opinion and suggestions. If
you have an opinion regarding the reconstruction project, please use
this link to send us an e-mail and let us know how you feel about this
important road issue. There will also be public meetings held through
September to inform interested parties of the road project details.
